Waste plastic generation assessment, feasibility study of recycling plant and business model development

Mercy Corps, in partnership with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), is launching a new initiative to tackle plastic waste management and create employment opportunities in three refugee camps in the Fafan Zone.

This 44-month project, titled "Strengthened Socio-Economic Development and Better Employment Opportunities for Refugees and Host Communities (STEDE)," will focus on the camps of Awbarre, Sheder, and Kabribeyah. The initiative will involve:

  • Waste Plastic Generation Assessment: Understanding the amount and types of plastic waste generated in the camps.
  • Recycling Plant Feasibility Study: Evaluating the viability of establishing a recycling plant to process plastic waste in the region.
  • Business Model Development: Creating a sustainable business model to support the operation of the recycling plant and ensure its long-term success.

This project aims to not only improve waste management practices in the refugee camps but also provide much-needed job opportunities for both refugees and host communities.
